The Midas Touch

The film is set in Budapest. The account begins after the Second World War. It runs up to the revolt of 1956. The central figure is the man who runs the black market. He knows everyone in the city. He believes money can settle anything. He buys the people around him. His dealings with his family rest on the same logic. The market in the eighth district sits at the centre. Teleki square appears often in the film. As the years pass the country changes. Things come apart in the days of the revolt. The man meets something money cannot settle. Real footage of the fighting was used in the film. Károly Eperjes and Judit Pogány appear in the one hundred four minute film, a Hungarian production Géza Bereményi finished in 1989.
