What The Miracle of Marcelino Is About
A baby left at the door of a monastery is raised by the friars, and the boy begins talking to someone in the attic he is forbidden to enter. Ladislao Vajda tells it as a miracle story, but its most engaging material is practical rather than religious: twelve grown men with no idea how to raise a child, and the comic and touching consequences of that. The black and white photography and bare sets keep it in the register of a fable. The ending is not left ambiguous but stated very plainly, which makes the film either too sweet or devastating depending on the viewer.
