What Uncle Hyacynth Is About
Jacinto, once a bullfighter, is poor now and scrapes by with his nephew Pepote. One day a letter arrives: because of a promise he made a few days ago he has to appear at a bullfight that same afternoon. But he is not ready and there is very little time. Uncle and nephew spend the day going from street to street over a thing that has to be solved in a few hours. Ladislao Vajda's film is set in a poor neighbourhood and almost all of it was shot in the street. The telling does not ask for pity; poverty is not a display here but the ground of the story. Pablito Calvo plays Pepote and Antonio Vico plays Jacinto. It is counted among the Spanish films standing closest to Italian neorealism.
