What Blancanieves Is About
In Spain in the twenties, Carmen, the daughter of a famous matador, is pushed out of the house by her stepmother and, after losing her memory, joins a travelling troupe of dwarf bullfighters. Pablo Berger moves the Grimm tale to Andalusia and shoots it by the rules of silent cinema: black and white, intertitles, no dialogue, continuous music. The choice does not read as pastiche because flamenco and bullfighting are woven into the storytelling. Its best perception is that the fairy tale was always dark, and the ending sides with Grimm rather than Disney. Maribel Verdú plays the stepmother. It was Spain's Oscar submission that year and won best film at the Goyas. Who it is for: viewers who like silent cinema experiments and fairy tale adaptations.
