The Mohican

Joseph is one of the last shepherds grazing animals on the Corsican coast. His land is wanted for a property development, and those who want it come from the underworld. Joseph refuses to sell. When he leaves the man sent to frighten him, the son of the man who runs the organisation, close to death, the hunt begins. On an island this small there is nowhere to run and everyone knows him. Frédéric Farrucci tells the question of land in Corsica through a chase: tourist investment, coastal property changing hands, and the end of traditional herding. The narrative does not make Joseph a hero; the cost of his stubbornness is paid by the people around him too. Alexis Manenti plays Joseph. The landscape carries the film, and across the chase the island keeps getting smaller. Who it's for: Viewers who like French crime thrillers, narratives of rural resistance, and landscape-driven films. Who it's not for: The pace is slow and there is little action. Where the ending is going is also clear from the start.
