The Monopoly on Violence

The documentary argues about the relation between the state and violence. According to the film our daily dealings rest mostly on consent. The state stands outside that picture. The film argues that the state keeps its power by the threat of force. Its authority to make law rests on that. It allows no rival to its authority. The film calls this a monopoly. The documentary is built on interviews. Those who speak come mostly from a libertarian line. Politicians and writers are among them. The film is a work that argues for that view. It gives little room to the opposing side. The claims it makes are the film’s own claims. Dave Smith and Eric July appear in the one hundred six minute documentary. It is an American and Mexican production Chris Cofer finished in 2020.
