What The Most Distant Course Is About
Tang, a sound recordist, goes to Taitung and records the sounds of nature in the hope of reaching the girlfriend who left him, sending the tapes to her old address. But she has long since moved and the tapes reach Yun, who has just taken that flat; the more she listens the more she feels she has to go to the place those sounds came from. Around the same time Tsai, a psychiatrist whose marriage has ended, leaves everything and sets out to look for a woman he once loved. The three move towards the same coast without knowing one another, and the distance between them stops being geographical. Lin Jing-jie’s hundred and eighteen minute Taiwanese film is his first feature; Gwei Lun-mei plays Yun and Mo Tzu-yi plays Tang. It was completed in 2007 and won the International Critics’ Week award at Venice.
