The Mutants

Three teenagers live on the street and try to stay alive together. Andreia is pregnant; Pedro and Ricardo do whatever they can find to get by. The two of them steal and are exploited by a man who makes pornography. The film does not show that exploitation, it names it. All three are children left outside the institutions, and nobody takes them back. The account neither pities them nor blames them. Teresa Villaverde gives the violence and the poverty in long scenes and without enlarging them. The hundred and thirteen minutes are given to these three children. Ana Moreira and Alexandre Pinto appear in Teresa Villaverde’s film, a joint Portuguese and French production, completed in 1998.
