What The Naked Street Is About
Phil Regal, a hard New York mobster, wants to straighten out the situation of his pregnant sister Rosalie, so he leans on witnesses and buys a store clerk to get her condemned boyfriend, Nicky Bradna, out of prison. The interference turns on him soon enough. Maxwell Shane's 1955 film belongs to the late stretch of noir, where crime has become a matter of family debt and everyone is obliged to everyone else. Anthony Quinn plays the gangster and Farley Granger the young man, with one of Anne Bancroft's early parts alongside. The Brooklyn streets give it a rough texture.
