What The Glass Wall Is About
Maxwell Shane's film opens with Peter Kuban, a Hungarian refugee who has jumped ship in New York harbour and is about to be deported. His one card is an American soldier named Tom whom he helped during the war, and who can prove his right to enter the country legally. But Peter has twenty four hours to find him and no idea where to start in New York. The film turns the search into a walk that lasts through the night and shoots the city street by street on real locations. That the right to asylum hangs on one document and one witness supplies all of its tension. Vittorio Gassman takes one of his first American roles, with Gloria Grahame also in the film.
