What The New Watchdogs Is About
In 1932 Paul Nizan published The Watchdogs against the philosophers and writers of his day, arguing that behind a claim to neutrality they were standing guard over the established order. The documentary puts the same question to present-day France: who are the journalists, columnists and television commentators speaking for? It shows the same names appearing both at the meetings of large corporations and on air, and the same opinions repeated across different channels. Gilles Balbastre and Yannick Kergoat directed it together, taking off from Serge Halimi's book of the same name. It caused a considerable argument in France and reached the final list for the César for best documentary. Its thesis is plain: the owners of a press that calls itself independent are the very interests it ought to be criticising.
