What The Night Visitor Is About
A man named Salem has been convicted of murder on the testimony of his sister and her husband, and shut in an asylum. He says he did not do it and nobody listens. One winter night he works out how to get out of his cell, crosses the snow to the farm, and is back before it gets light. Nobody knows he can get out, so no suspicion goes anywhere near him. László Benedek directs, with Max von Sydow, Liv Ullmann and Trevor Howard. It is a British-Swedish thriller shot with Bergman's actors, and Henry Mancini wrote the score. It is built on snow, on silence, and on one man's arithmetic.
