What The Nightingale Is About
To keep a promise he made to his late wife, old Zhigen sets out for her home region in Guangxi with a bird in a cage. His granddaughter, whom he barely knows and who grew up in the city thoroughly spoiled, comes with him. The road is long, the bus breaks down and there is no signal. Slowly the two of them start to know each other. The film was made by the French director Philippe Muyl, who had told the same shape in France with a butterfly hunter and a little girl. China submitted it for the foreign film Oscar, a choice that surprised people at home. It handles the distance between rural China and the urban middle class without enlarging it, through the silence between two generations.
