What The Notebook Is About
During the Second World War two twin boys are left with their grandmother in a village on the Hungarian border. She gives them neither proper food nor affection, and the village has no intention of helping. To learn how to survive, the brothers set about training themselves systematically against pain, hunger and feeling, writing down everything that happens in the notebook their father gave them. János Szász adapted Ágota Kristóf's 1986 novel, took the top prize at Karlovy Vary in 2013, and the film went forward as Hungary's Oscar submission. Cruelty towards children runs through all of it.
