What The Olive Tree Is About
Alma's family produced olive oil in Castellón for generations; when the industry changed they left the land for a poultry business. Years ago, to clear debts, they uprooted and sold a thousand-year-old olive tree from their grove, and her grandfather has not spoken since, and has stopped eating. Alma cannot bear the thought of him dying without seeing that undone, so she sets off towards Germany to find the tree and bring it back. Bollaín's film is a family story and also a story about how the countryside was emptied. The road sections edge into comedy; what sits under them does not lighten.
