What The Other Dream Team Is About
A large share of the best players in Soviet basketball were Lithuanian, but the medals went into the USSR's column. Newly independent Lithuania wanted to appear at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics under its own flag for the first time, and had no money to do it. The help arrived from an unlikely direction, the Grateful Dead, who wrote a cheque and had tie dyed kit made for the team in the Lithuanian colours. On 8 August 1992 the team beat the Unified Team, assembled from the former Soviet republics, 82 to 78 in the bronze medal game. Marius Markevicius tells it not as a sporting result but as the moment independence was announced on a court. Sarunas Marciulionis and Arvydas Sabonis both speak.
