What The Other Side of Everything Is About
Inside a flat in Belgrade there is a door that has been locked for years. The director uses that door as an entrance both to her family’s past and to her country’s political inheritance. The flat was divided after the war and part of it given to other people; the door has been shut ever since. The director talks with her own mother, an academic who spent many years inside the opposition. In this way the film reaches from inside one house out to the breaking apart of Yugoslavia. The door is not used as a metaphor; it is a genuinely locked door and opening it requires a decision. Mila Turajlic’s hundred and four minute Serbian documentary was completed in 2017.
