The Passion of Anna

Andreas, living alone on the island, falls into a relationship with Anna, whom he meets by chance. Anna lost her husband and son in an accident and describes that marriage as flawless; Andreas opens his own past to nobody. At the same time animals on the island are being killed by someone and the neighbours accuse a man. Ingmar Bergman shot it on Fårö and did something unusual: four times during the film the actors turn to camera and talk about the characters they are playing. Liv Ullmann, Max von Sydow, Bibi Andersson and Erland Josephson star. Colour was an early experiment for Bergman and the cinematographer Sven Nykvist works in shades of grey. The subject is where the violence comes from and the fact that nobody knows. Who it is for: viewers who like Bergman and psychological drama. Who it is not for: anyone troubled by scenes in which animals are harmed.
