What The Peach Thief Is About
Towards the end of the First World War, a prison camp in Bulgaria. Elisaveta, the wife of the camp's commander, catches a Serbian prisoner stealing fruit in her own garden. The man's name is Ivo. Between them there is first a conversation and then something else. The camp is close by, the war is nearly over, and both of them know how this ends. Vulo Radev directed the film from a story by Emilian Stanev, and it counts as one of the best known Bulgarian productions. Nevena Kokanova and Rade Marković take the leads; both won awards at the national festival in 1964. The telling keeps the war in the background and puts the distance between two people in front. The camerawork comes from Radev's own first trade.
