What The Penguin Pool Murder Is About
Hildegarde Withers, a New York schoolteacher, invites herself into the case and starts helping a detective when the body of the unscrupulous stockbroker Gerald Parker turns up in the penguin tank at the aquarium. Teaching children is her actual job, but the questioning she keeps up out of curiosity and sheer stubbornness has no regard for the inspector’s pride or for her own safety. Adapted from the novels of Stuart Palmer, the film is the first of the six Withers and Inspector Piper pictures RKO made between 1932 and 1937; James Gleason played the inspector in all six, while Edna May Oliver appeared only in the first three. George Archainbaud directed the seventy minute American production, with Robert Armstrong, Mae Clarke and Edgar Kennedy in support.
