What The Personals Is About
A woman who has given up her practice as an eye doctor places an advertisement in a newspaper to find someone to marry, and meets the men one after another in a café. Those who come resemble each other in nothing: the lonely, the ones hiding that they are married, the ones after money, the ones who only want to talk, and the ones who go far enough to frighten her. In most scenes the camera stays at a single table, and as she listens it emerges that the story really being told is her own; why she placed the advertisement at all becomes clear only slowly. Chen Kuo-fu’s hundred and four minute Taiwanese film was adapted from a novel; René Liu takes the lead, and it was completed in 1998.
