What The Phantom Is About
Carlos DeLuna was convicted of the 1983 killing of Wanda Lopez, who was working in a petrol station shop in Corpus Christi, and was executed on 7 December 1989. He said to the end that he was innocent and that another man, Carlos Hernandez, had done it; the prosecution called Hernandez a phantom DeLuna had invented. Years later James Liebman and his students at Columbia Law School established that Hernandez was entirely real and that his record could be turned up in a matter of hours. Patrick Forbes builds the documentary out of that investigation, and what it shows is how thin the ground under a death sentence can be.
