What The Phantom Lover Is About
Ronny Yu’s 1995 Hong Kong film remakes Song at Midnight, made in 1937 by Ma-Xu Weibang, who had transplanted Gaston Leroux’s Phantom of the Opera to China and earned himself the title of the country’s master of horror. In 1936 a theatre troupe close to bankruptcy starts performing in a burned-out building where the great actor Song Danping died, and one of the company, Wei Qing, begins seeing things. Yu is far more interested in melodrama and music than in horror, and Leslie Cheung both acts and sings the part. The production also rode the attention around the stage musical, which played in Hong Kong the same year.
