What The Philosopher's Stone Is About
Satyajit Ray's comedy opens with a middle-aged and unremarkable bank clerk. He finds a stone in the road that turns iron into gold, and his life changes overnight: money, invitations, newspaper stories, new friends. The film is interested not in the enrichment itself but in how the people around the enriched man behave, since everyone's interest in him is worth exactly what the stone is worth. Ray turns the fairy tale into a satire of society and ends up questioning standing rather than money. Tulsi Chakraborty leads, in a performance the director praised as highly as any he directed. It is a little known and thoroughly enjoyable film caught between his serious dramas.
