The Plastic Detox

The documentary follows six couples who have been diagnosed with unexplained infertility. No medical cause has been found, and the couples join an experiment: they will reduce the plastics in their homes. Kitchen containers, cosmetics, packaging, drinking water and every other daily point of contact are changed one by one. Urine samples are taken before and after and the chemical levels in their bodies are measured. Josh Murphy and Louie Psihoyos direct. Psihoyos has made documentaries on environmental subjects before. The study behind the film is real: research led by Jenna Hua of Million Marker was published in the journal Toxics, and the documentary follows the participants of that study. Among the experts speaking is Shanna Swan, who works in reproductive epidemiology and is known for her research on falling sperm counts. The film's claim is that hormone disrupting chemicals affect reproductive health; the narrative does not present that alone as a settled causal relation, but it puts the measurements forward. Its most concrete side is measurement; the couples' results are shown on screen and the change is given as a number. It was released on Netflix on 16 March 2026. Who it is for: viewers who like environmental health documentary and narratives built on data. Who it is not for: the register raises alarm in places, the sample is small, and the film looks for its solution largely in individual consumer choices.
