What The Possessors Is About
Noël Schoudler has built an empire standing on three legs: sugar, banking and the press. He rules his companies and his family alike as an absolute sovereign, and nobody says no to him. Then somebody challenges that authority, and it is his own son François. The fight between father and son runs on in the boardroom and at the dinner table at once. Denys de La Patellière adapted the film from Maurice Druon's novel, with Jean Gabin as Schoudler. It is one of the best known of Gabin's ageing, unsoftening patriarchs, and the film shows the bourgeois family from the inside without smoothing any of it.
