What There's Always a Price Tag Is About
A penniless painter saves a rich man who is trying to throw himself under a car, and the grateful man hires him as his chauffeur. The household he enters turns out to be built around a life insurance policy: the man’s death has to stop looking like suicide and start looking like murder before anything is paid out. Written by Denys de La Patellière with Michel Audiard and adapted from a 1956 James Hadley Chase novel, it is among the cleanest examples of French noir. Michèle Morgan plays the woman and Daniel Gélin the man being drawn into it. The English title under which it circulates is simply the title of the Chase novel it came from.
