What Rue de Paris Is About

Henri spent the war in a prison camp and learned on his return that he had lost his wife. In a working class district of Paris he brings up his three children on his own. Years pass, the children grow, and none of them turns out the way their father wanted: one is chasing a dream, one turns to other ways of getting money, and his daughter builds a life that takes him by surprise. Denys de La Patellière's film is a typical example of Jean Gabin's late roles: hard, sparing with words, a father who does not understand his children. Marie-José Nat and Claude Brasseur play the children. The telling sets the generation gap against France at the end of the 1950s; it does not say the father is right, nor that the children are wrong.
