What The Rage Is About

In a world of manele music, drugs and illegal street racing, two young people are thrown around by a debt they cannot pay in time. Luca and Mona’s lives change direction in a single night, dropping them into an order where anyone who does not know how to pay does not last. Radu Muntean’s first feature takes its speed and its black humour from the actual sound of the street. In his own account the director was not trying to make a social film but to take the pulse of the aggression and the violence simmering in Romanian society at the time. Dragoş Bucur and Dorina Chiriac lead. It won best first film from the Romanian Filmmakers Union and best cinematography at the Transilvania festival in 2003. Muntean later became one of the central figures of the Romanian new wave.
