Radu Muntean's 2021 Romanian film follows a group of volunteers delivering aid to mountain villages in Transylvania. On the road they come upon an old man; where to leave him is unclear, and their wish to do good quickly becomes a problem. The idea is who defines what help is. The volunteers argue among themselves about what to do and never ask what the man wants; the narrative shows this not as ill will but as a habit nobody notices. Muntean works in the known manner of the Romanian new wave: long takes, natural light and dialogue close to improvisation. The night section in the forest is the body of the film and its tension comes from there. Who it's for: those who like Romanian cinema and dramas built on a moral dilemma. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a clear conclusion; the film leaves the question unresolved.
