What Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade Is About
In an alternative postwar Japan a special police unit suppresses uprisings. An officer who fails to stop a girl carrying a bomb from detonating it later meets her sister. The film opens like an action anime and never returns to it; the narrative is built entirely on whether these two people are using each other, with the tale of Red Riding Hood repeating underneath. The ending is merciless. Hiroyuki Okiura directed, from a script by Mamoru Oshii. It is hand drawn in a deliberately realistic style. Who it's for: those who like slow, political, bleak anime. Who it's not for: viewers wanting action; for long stretches nothing happens.
