What The River Is About
A family lives on a wide plain ringed by mountains in Kazakhstan. There are five brothers in the house. The eldest, Aslan, is charged with sharing out the work their father gives them. The father is hard; the brothers work all day and find no time for play. When his brothers err, Aslan understands them and takes the blame himself. One day he takes them to the river, which is deep enough for a real swim. After that day life is different, and the river moves to the centre of everything. A chance contact with the modern world then threatens the order they are used to. Zhalgas Klanov and Zhasulan Userbayev appear in Emir Baigazin’s hundred and thirteen minute film, a joint Kazakh, Norwegian and Polish production, completed in 2018.
