What The Road to Mandalay Is About
Lianqing and Guo flee from Burma. Both cross into Thailand illegally, and they meet on the way over the Mekong. Once in Bangkok, Lianqing finds work in a textile workshop. Guo sees the work as temporary; Lianqing wants out of poverty for good. What both of them need is the same thing: false identity papers. But only one of them manages it, and after that what is between them comes apart. What Guo feels for Lianqing is not returned. The film closes in violence there is no coming back from. Wu Ke-xi and Kai Ko appear in Midi Z’s film of 2016, a coproduction of five countries.
