What The Sea Is Watching Is About
Kei Kumai's 2002 film was made from Akira Kurosawa's last screenplay. It was the text he was working on when he died, written from two stories by Shugoro Yamamoto. In nineteenth-century Edo, O-Shin, who works in a brothel, helps a young samurai escape his pursuers one night and falls in love with him. Everyone warns her, the more experienced Kikuno above all: in this house, becoming attached to a client does not end well. The film draws the women neither as victims nor as ornament, and puts the solidarity between them at the centre of the story. Misa Shimizu and Nagiko Tono star.
