What Death of a Tea Master Is About
Years after the death of the legendary tea master Rikyu, his disciple Honkakubo tries to resolve the mystery of his master’s death. The inquiry proceeds not like a detective story but like a work of remembering and interpretation; the disciple thinks again about old conversations and encounters. The film does not use the tea ceremony as decor but gives it as a way of thinking. The account offers no definite answer and does not attempt to explain the master’s decision. The scenes are held long, there is little movement, and silence is the film’s real material. The tension between power and art in sixteenth century Japan stands in the background. Eiji Okuda and Toshiro Mifune appear in Kei Kumai’s hundred and seven minute Japanese film, completed in 1989.
