What The Sea and Poison Is About
In the last months of the Second World War the crew of a downed American aircraft are brought to a Japanese university hospital, where operations are performed on their living bodies for the sake of experiment. The film opens after the war with two junior doctors and a nurse being questioned by the American military police, and tells what happened by going back. Its real question is not who gave the order but why nobody could say no; everyone is working out their own position, and inside one room killing becomes ordinary. Kei Kumai shot it in black and white at a cold distance and left no scene that would let the viewer off. Adapted from the novel Shusaku Endo wrote out of a real case, the hundred and twenty three minute Japanese film features Eiji Okuda and Ken Watanabe; it was completed in 1986.
