Micha Bayard R Richard Martin-Jordan What The Seats of the Alcazar Is About
A Frenchman remembers the days when he went back and forth to the cinema in the middle of the fifties. At the time he was writing for the magazine Cahiers du Cinéma, and the hall he went to was called the Alcazar. The place no longer exists, and the account is built around somewhere that has closed. The film describes the cinema as a place to gather as much as a place to watch. Criticism appears here not as a profession but as a passion and a running argument. The French film debates of the fifties make up the background. At fifty three minutes it stays under the length of a feature. Luc Moullet’s French film was completed in 1989.
