The United States Navy sent an expedition to Antarctica in 1946. The expedition was called Operation High Jump. It ran into 1947. Admiral Richard E. Byrd was in overall command. Byrd had been to the region before. There were thirteen ships in the fleet. More than four thousand people took part. They set out from Norfolk. They went through the Panama Canal and then south. Getting through the ice pack was dangerous. The submarine in the fleet had to withdraw because of it. Every frame of the documentary was shot by military photographers. The expedition met its scientific aims. Robert Montgomery narrates the seventy one minute film. Robert Taylor and Van Heflin lend their voices as well. It is an American production Orville O. Dull finished in 1948.
