What The Seven Ravens Is About
Alice Nellis's 2015 Czech-Slovak film is adapted from a fairy tale by Božena Němcová. Bohdanka grows up as a baker's daughter with a secret her family has kept for years: in a fit of rage her mother cursed her seven sons and the boys became ravens. When Bohdanka is grown and learns the truth, she decides to save her brothers. Following the instructions of an eccentric witch, what she has to do is weave seven shirts from nettle fibre with her own hands. A children's film that neither prettifies the tale nor covers up what the mother did. It won festival awards for its cinematography and its music.
