What The Smoking Fish Is About
A young man out of prison comes to a brothel on the outskirts of Caracas. The middle aged woman who owns the place takes him on for odd jobs, but before long he takes the place of the man who runs it, who is also her lover. What follows is not a story of one man replacing another but of how the same arrangement repeats itself. The film tells corruption and relations of power in the Venezuela of the seventies from inside a single enclosed place. Because the film never goes outside the place, the country itself is read from inside those four walls. Hilda Vera plays the lead in Roman Chalbaud’s hundred and twenty minute Venezuelan film, completed in 1977.
