What The Snow Queen Is About
The Snow Queen takes Kai away to her own country, and Gerda sets out alone to find her friend. Along the way she lands in the palace of a king who is both cunning and ridiculous, meets forest robbers, and runs into a new obstacle at every stage. When she finally reaches the north she has to face the Queen herself. This Soviet version of the Andersen story comes by way of Yevgeny Schwartz's stage play rather than the tale directly. Gennadi Kazansky made it with actors, not as animation, with Elena Proklova as Gerda. What it is about is neither magic nor heroism; it is that persistence turns out to be stronger than cold.
