What The Spider Woman Is About
The Spider Woman is the seventh of fourteen Sherlock Holmes films Universal made pairing Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, and it was originally titled Sherlock Holmes in Peril during production. Though loosely credited to Conan Doyle's "The Adventure of the Dying Detective," it actually splices together elements from The Sign of Four, The Final Problem, The Adventure of the Empty House, The Adventure of the Devil's Foot, and The Adventure of the Speckled Band. Classically trained actress Gale Sondergaard plays the title villainess. Filming began on May 10, 1943. Who it's for: fans of the classic Hollywood Sherlock Holmes cycle and the Rathbone and Bruce pairing. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a clean adaptation faithful to a single Conan Doyle story, since this one blends several together.
