What The Stoneman Murders Is About
Someone starts killing homeless people as they sleep on the pavements of 1980s Bombay, and the man chasing the case is a police officer under suspension. Manish Gupta’s film draws on a real file. The killer the press called the Stoneman murdered a dozen or more pavement dwellers in Mumbai from 1985 and then in Calcutta between 1989 and 1990, and was never identified; nobody was arrested and nobody was convicted. Gupta has said his script is roughly forty per cent fact. The heaviest thing about the case is who the victims were: people nobody came looking for when they vanished.
