What The Story of a Poor Young Man Is About
Vincenzo is young, holds an arts degree and cannot find steady work; he lives on temporary jobs, debt and his family's disappointment. Bartoloni, the old man in the same building, has had enough of a wife who was once a beautiful artist and now rules the flat through drink and bullying. The two men meet on a bad night, and Bartoloni lets slip an offer with a great deal of money attached. Ettore Scola's 1995 film sets this up not as a crime story but as a moral corner: where a man who badly needs money decides his own limit is. Alberto Sordi gives one of the best performances of his last years, with Rolando Ravello as Vincenzo. The pressure comes from no large event, only from money that does not last the month.
