What Unfair Competition Is About
Rome at the end of the thirties. Two fabric shops stand side by side and their owners try everything to take each other's customers. Then the fascist government passes the racial laws and one of them, being Jewish, is no longer allowed to trade. His rival sees this not as an opportunity but as an injustice, and years of hostility turn into something else. Ettore Scola tells it through the daily dealings of two shopkeepers rather than through great acts. The racial laws of 1938 were real and excluded Jews in Italy from schools, professions and business.
