What The Story of Asya Klyachina, Who Loved, But Did Not Marry Is About
Asya, lame and working on the collective farm, is in love with the father of the child she is carrying, and he does not love her back. She is left choosing between marrying a man she does not want and raising the child alone. Andrei Konchalovsky shot the film in 1967 in the village of Kadnitsy in the Gorky region and cast villagers in almost every part; the only professional was Iya Savvina as Asya. It was kept off screens for twenty years and only shown in December 1987. Audiences took to it immediately then, and what had caused the ban was precisely its refusal to dress village life up.
