What The Story of Dr. Wassell Is About
As the Japanese advance sweeps through the East Indies, Dr Wassell tries to get out of Java with wounded sailors from the cruiser Marblehead. The true story of how he saved a dozen or so men left behind when the able bodied were evacuated to Australia becomes, in Cecil B. DeMille's hands, a large scale war adventure. Gary Cooper plays the doctor. It was made in 1944, with the war still running, so it is both a rescue story and a piece written for the morale needs of its moment. Knowing that makes the tone easier to read.
