What The Street Player Is About

Mohamed Khan's 1983 Egyptian film follows Fares, a shoe factory worker who builds his life around street football. His skill earns him money in wager matches, but he can hold together neither his marriage nor his job, and his relationship with his son is crushed under the same disorder. Khan was among the most important figures of Egyptian realism in the eighties, and the film's strength is using the streets of Cairo as a living place rather than a constructed backdrop. Adel Emam steps outside his comic identity here to play a man who will not accept defeat. The story promises a tale of rising and does not deliver it; the real subject is a man using his talent to escape responsibility. Who it's for: viewers interested in Arab cinema and urban realism. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a story of triumph from a sports film, or who will find the ending unresolved.
