What The Goalie's Anxiety at the Penalty Kick Is About
Wim Wenders's early film adapts Peter Handke's short 1970 novel. Josef Bloch, a goalkeeper, commits a foul in an away game and is sent off. After that every connection in his life comes apart: he leaves the team, wanders the city without purpose, spends the night with a cinema box-office attendant and the next morning commits a senseless act of violence. The film does not explain the act and has no interest in guilt; Bloch does not run, he reads the papers, takes buses and behaves as though watching his own capture from a distance. Wenders is interested not in the event but in the link between a person and the world coming loose. The coldness of Handke's prose transfers well to the screen. It won the FIPRESCI prize at Venice. Who it's for: viewers who like the New German Cinema and films built on alienation. Who it's not for: anyone wanting motive and resolution; the film withholds both deliberately.
