What The Subject Was Roses Is About
Timmy Cleary comes home to the Bronx at the end of the Second World War and finds that his parents’ marriage has long since turned into a settling of accounts. A few days in a house with three people in it: the accusations, the sentences that cannot be taken back, the way a bunch of roses can be turned into a weapon. Ulu Grosbard made his first film from Frank D. Gilroy’s Pulitzer winning play. Jack Albertson repeated his stage role on screen and won an Oscar for it. Patricia Neal came back to the screen with this after a stroke three years earlier; Martin Sheen plays the son.
